East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 1644 to 1912 CE. A wonderful pair of glass longmas, exhibiting remarkable artistry. A longma is a mythological winged horse with dragon scales understood to be an omen of one of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors. The word longma is derived from "long" meaning dragon and "ma" meaning horse. Longma can also mean "an eminent person" and occurs in the phrase longma jingshen meaning "vigorous spirit in old age."
