Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. A fabulous pair of hand-carved mace heads, made from stones with similarly shaped profiles. The larger is a dark mottled brown stone with white and gray inclusions. A wide socketing hole is drilled through the center, and two rows of four tabs protrude from the sides. The smaller head is a pretty creamy white and gray stone with three rows of four tabs encircling the socket. The sockets enabled these mace heads to be set on handle or pole and would certainly cause damage with the carved sides, however mace heads such as these were also used to symbolize authority during processions. Size (larger): 3" Diameter x 1.5" H (7.6 cm x 3.8 cm); (smaller): 2.25" Diameter x 1.625" H (5.7 cm x 4.1 cm)
