Russia, Ca late 19th to early 20th century. Pair of religious icons, each painted in tempura over hard wood. The first example depicts the Virgin Mother holding the infant Jesus in her arms, religious symbols and Cyrillic text in the field. The second example is done in 4 panels, each with Virgin Mary, three of which depict her holding the Christ Child, the 4th shows her with 7 swords emerging from her heart. In the Immaculate heart of Mary, Traditionally, the heart is depicted pierced with seven wounds or swords, in homage to the seven dolors of Mary. Added gold leaf and two lines of Cyrillic text complete the decoration. 5-3/8" H and 4-3/8" H respectively.

Provenance: Ex-Brining collection acquired through family descent.
