Description:

Mexico, ca. 19th Century CE. A pair of antique Mexican retablos depicting two versions of the popular El Nino de Atocha. Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. The subject of both retablos is El Nino de Atocha, whose tradition may be traced back to a suburb of Madrid, where prisoners of the faith were said to have been visited and nourished by a young boy dressed as a wandering pilgrim. Because of the miraculous nature of the child's appearance, it is accepted that he was a manifestation of the Child Jesus. In both examples, he is shown seated on an elaborate chair, dressed in a capelet and plumed hat. He holds a staff with gourds attached and a small basket of food and flowers. While the subject and positioning remain the same, it is interesting to note the interpretations of two very different artists. Their use of color and detail add personality to each painting. 9 1/2" x 6 1/2" and 6 7/8" x 5"
