Description:

Northern Europe, Viking, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A long, sharp, iron spear point with a triangular blade, thick rib, sloping shoulders, and narrow socket bisected near its base by a rivet hole. A handle would have been attached here via an inserted nail. This blade is long, like the spear head described in Laxdaela Saga ("Saga of the People of Laxardalr) that Helgi thrusts through Bolli's shield and subsequently through Bolli. The socket of this example nicely demonstrates how a Viking blacksmith would have made it - by drawing out and hammering flat material from the base of the blade before wrapping it around a mandrel to shape it. In some examples, as here, the overlapping portions were not fully welded. Size: 0.95" W x 16" H (2.4 cm x 40.6 cm); 16.25" H (41.3 cm) on included custom stand.
