Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Dennis Hawkins (British, 1925-2001). "De Cabeza" serigraph in colors, 1969. Edition 25 of 75. Signature, title, date, and edition number handwritten in pencil at center left and right. A striking mid-century serigraph in colors by British artist Dennis Hawkins. The composition of "De Cabeza" (Upside Down in English) features a wonderful ensemble of geometric shapes - squares, circles, and rectangles - arranged in a manner that plays with interpretations of its title "De Cabeza" meaning "Upside Down". Perhaps Hawkins has reversed the upper and lower parts or mixed them up in a topsy turvy fashion. Size (serigraph): 30.75" L x 22.75" W (78.1 cm x 57.8 cm) Size (frame): 39.625" L x 31.625" W (100.6 cm x 80.3 cm)

About the Artist: "Painter, sculptor, printmaker and teacher who studied at Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford, 1947–9, then Slade School of Fine Art, 1949–52, teachers including William Coldstream and Graham Sutherland. Showed at Gimpel Fils, AIA, LG, Redfern Gallery and New Vision Centre and International Print Biennales in Tokyo and Florence. Commissions included murals and bas-reliefs at New Hospital, Netheredge, Sheffield, and a series of panels for Royal Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. He became director of art at Repton School, living at Repton, Derbyshire." (ART UK - Source: "Artists in Britain Since 1945" by David Buckman - Art Dictionaries Ltd. Part of Sansom & Company)
