Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 700 CE. An impressive hammered-copper burial mask depicting the stylized face of a lord or king. The visage is composed of a bulbous nose, low relief eyes with shell pupils, and separately attached earspools to the sides. Masks for the lower society were comprised of wood, ceramic, or cloth, while those belonging to the most respected and powerful were made of copper, gold, and/or silver. These masks were for funerary purposes, to allow the deceased to transform into the spirit or figure the mask presented. Size: 11" L x 7.5" H (27.9 cm x 19 cm)

  • Condition: Professionally repaired and restored, break lines are nearly indiscernible, with a green pigment / adhesive blended into the copper surface. Repaired on upper left and right corner, right side and center of chin, and around both eyes. A few missing chips to the peripheries, but otherwise nice preservation, and green patina throughout. Remaining fibers from ancient textile on the verso of an earspool.
