Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is a large and beautiful wooden carving of the Buddha, painted with silvery and golden metallic hues and inlaid with hundreds of glass and mirror shards arranged in rosettes and beaded flourishes. He is seated on an integral pedestal in full lotus position, his hands forming the earth witness mudra gesture, his right hand resting on his knee reaching towards the ground, and his other hand in his lap. He wears lavish robes, the naturalistic folds of the drapery cascade around the legs and over his shoulders. Circular mirror fragments and glass in red and green outline the hem of his robe, pedestal, and brow line. The face is serene with painted eyes lending a life-like quality to the visage, and his characteristically elongated ears touch his shoulders. His coiffure is carved into nodules and create a top knot ushnisha at the center. This is a larger statue that may have resided in a temple- imagine the shimmering surface in flickering light! Size: 38" L x 24" W x 42" H (96.5 cm x 61 cm x 106.7 cm)
