Description:

North America, Southwest US, Mesa Verde, Colorado, ca. 1100 to 1300 CE. This large bowl, expertly created by the Anasazi artisans of Mesa Verde is particularly striking for its elaborate black (deep brown) on white decorative program of hand-painted concentric zigzag and striation highlighted registers with what appear to be billowing clouds nestled between them, all swirling toward the bottom of the bowl. This example has two perforations for suspension as well as a wire suspension system that was created later. A magnificent and large example created by the Ancestral Puebloans! Size: 13" in diameter x 7"H.

Such motifs were likely nature-inspired references to rainfall. Anasazi pottery tends to be constructed of white or gray clay, and is constructed with a technique that used coils that were then scraped smooth. Early on, these were often decorated with black geometric designs, but later on polychrome types are developed, some of which would be ancestral to historic Hopi pottery.
