Description:

Spain or Mexico, ca. 18th-19th centuries CE. This is a large oil on canvas painting that would have stretched out in a large space. This painting follows the long artistic tradition of painting the Ascension with an upper, Heavenly area (the brightly lit, colorful Jesus) and a lower, earthly realm (the darker area). The artwork depicts the Ascension of Jesus, with the stigmata clearly visible on his hands and feet. He is wearing rich blue robes; below him, ten men, presumably his disciples, look on; four are grouped off to the left and may represent the Gospel writers. Two women are also below him. One, with the blue head covering, is presumably his mother Mary; the other may be Martha or another woman from his story. The artwork on the faces of the women is particularly fine. Size: 121"H x 67"W. Provenance: Ex-James Caswell, Historia Antiques, Santa Monica, CA. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #110173

  • Condition: Very minor tears with some wear to oil though art is still clear in most places; some folds and marks from having been stretched.
