Description:

Late Roman, Mediterranean region, ca. 200 to 300 CE. Made of beige pottery with no visible decoration with a handle for easy carrying, a small hole for pouring in oil and a larger hole where the burning flame would have emerged. The base bears the name of the manufacturer. Oil lamps are some of the most common household items found in the Roman Mediterranean world. Oil lamps are one of the artifacts that demonstrate how "global" an empire the Romans had; lamps with brand stamps produced in Modena (a major center of lamp manufacture) have been found in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Roman households would commonly burn olive oil imported from Spain, although other kinds of oil were also used depending on location and availability. This lamp is a later example and was mass produced. Size: 4" x 3" x 1-1/2". Provenance: Ex-private New York City collection; ex-private Wagner collection, Cape Cod, MA. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #109067

  • Condition: The lamp was cracked and repaired but is now completely together aside from a missing chip from one end. Any decoration it may have had is completely worn. The "brand name" is slightly chipped but legible with fine lettering.
