Description:

Roman, Late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to early 5th century CE. A petite yet sturdy free-blown, semi-translucent glass bowl of a gorgeous aubergine color with a slight concave base and rough pontil scar, curved walls, a shallow basin with a pronounced central kick, and a thick rim. The interior bears lustrous swaths of thick silvery iridescence which provide a nice complementary presentation, and areas of similar iridescence are scattered along the exterior. Small vessels like this were used as condiment holders for the nightly Roman dinner, or "cena," and likely held garum, a fermented yet sweet-tasting fish sauce. Size: 3.425" W x 0.875" H (8.7 cm x 2.2 cm).
