Description:

Late Roman to Early Byzantine, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A striking miniature glass vessel that stands out for its attractive form and brilliant coloring. Its globular body is elegantly articulated by nine evenly-spaced pinched indentations; a tubular neck leads to a flared mouth with a folded rim, and generous trailed handles join rim to shoulder. All is comprised of translucent teal / peacock blue glass with ribbon-like patterns of regal purple flowing through much of the vessel. Size: 2.625" in diameter x 2.375" H (6.7 cm x 6 cm)

Indeed the color blue, found throughout nature, from the sky to sea, was no doubt coveted by the ancients. Pliny sang the praises of colorful glass and its ability to mimic the hues - including rich blues - of gems "…and others that reproduce the appearance of fluor-spar, blue sapphires or lapis lazuli, and, indeed, glass exists in any color." (Pliny, Natural History XXXVI. 198)
