Description:

Roman, Imperial Period to early Byzantine Empire, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. A fine cast leaded-bronze stamp of trefoil form with an integral ring handle on the verso. The recessed cavity along the obverse face contains 3 raised Latin letters "S I T" surrounded by a raised border. Bread stamps like this example were impressed into a loaf of bread at the town bakery to mitigate theft and ensure a bread loaf went home with the correct customer. Size: 1.5" Diameter (3.8 cm)
