Description:

Holy Land, late Roman Imperial / early Byzantine Empire, ca. late 4th to 6th century CE. A sturdy oil lamp that is cast from bronze via the lost wax (cire perdue) technique. The circular lamp rests atop a slightly concave base, has a narrow neck channel with a teardrop-shaped wick spout, and an integral ring handle surmounted by a lunate thumb rest. The gaping fill hole suggests that it was once accompanied by a lid. Wonderful layers of green and brown patina envelop the entire vessel. Size: 3.7" L x 2.125" W x 1.8" H (9.4 cm x 5.4 cm x 4.6 cm); 4.375" H (11.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired in 2002 from Venus Gallery, Israel
