Description:

Rome / Byzantine, ca. 6th century CE. A hexagonal bronze vessel with straight walls with linear decoration at underside of rim and base, three attachment loops on the rim, suspended from three chains that connect. Note that the chains are of slightly different lengths and are comprised of loops of differing sizes. Given the consistent quality of the patina we deem this to be an old repair. How remarkable to find such an example of ancient ingenuity! Censers were incense burners. They are often difficult to differentiate from lamps, because they share a number of similar characteristics. Hence, it is also possible that this particular example although very likely an incense burner may have been used as a lamp. Size: 7"L with chain x 4" at widest (17.8 x 10.2 cm); vessel is 2.25" H (5.7 cm) high

Provenance: Ex-private New Jersey collection acquired prior to 1980.
