Description:

**Originally Listed At $900**

Roman, late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A tapered cast bronze situla with a beaker-shaped body. Three raised bands around the neck form two deep ridges. Rising from these at opposite sides of the mouth are two thin terminals, each drilled through, with a tall, curved handle. The situla was originally made for cooling and serving wine at banquets; others were used to hold ashes, or were buried with offerings in tombs. The interior of this example has a matte bronze-colored patina that suggests it was left for hundreds or even thousands of years with liquid resting inside of it. Size: 5.1" W x 5.4" H (13 cm x 13.7 cm)

  • Condition: Slight bending to form low on the body on one side, with small surface cracks around that area. Fascinating mottled patina, probably indicating a long period of deposition with liquids in the interior - hues of very dark green, bright turquoise, and grey intermingle with a matte bronze.
