Description:

Roman, Late Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A bronze horse head amulet, hollow-cast and featuring a Greek inscription on the back border, with an integral loop for suspension or attachment. The equine was carefully rendered with strong details - large almond-shaped eyes, a pointed ear in high relief, a plaited mane, flared nostrils, and slightly open mouth. Horses signified power and military prowess. In addition, they were symbolic of the god Neptune as well as the Roman legions. A wonderful ancient bronze work with rich green and russet patina. Size: 3.375" W x 2.625" H (8.6 cm x 6.7 cm); 4.375" H (11.1 cm) on included custom stand.
