North America, Midwest / Eastern United States, Late Prehistoric Mississippian culture, ca. 1350 to 1700 CE. A beautiful discoidal formed from speckled brown-and-black granite that is sanded smooth. The round-edged discoidal has shallow wells sanded into the top and bottom. The discoidal - a game piece - of the style known as the "Tennessee double cup," was popular in what is now Tennessee. Examples like this one were used to play the game of "chunkey," which had many different rules and styles of play. The discoidal would have been a treasured item and could have been used for several generations. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 4" Diameter x 2.1" H (10.2 cm x 5.3 cm).
