Description:

Northwestern Europe, Netherlands, Late Pleistocene, ca. 129,000 to 11,700 years ago. A fossilized molar from a prehistoric woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primogenius). The surface of the tooth is textured with marine encrustations such as worm casings and several tiny, shells- indicating time spent in the ocean. This tooth purportedly came from the Netherlands, and so the North Sea was most likely the resting spot for this tooth before its discovery - possibly by fishermen or beach combers. Before sea levels rose, land connected continental Europe with England; a habitat suitable for different animals, including mammoths. When sea levels rose and covered the land, the low oxygen and cold water helped preserve the organic material - such as this tooth! Size: 6" L x 3" W x 5" H (15.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, acquired from a private European collection
