Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, probably Guatemala, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A large and quite exceptional jade plaque/ pendant with the head of a Mayan lord. As with virtually all Mayan jade carvings the artist used the entire jade stone and filled it with an incredibly detailed portrait of a lord. Face with up-turned almond shaped eyes, mouth in distinct frown, large earpools to each side of his head with triple scrolls decorating his chest and large headdress secured with mat glyph attachment at the top. Rare to find this fine! Size: 2.5" W x 2.75" H (6.4 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: private R.D. collection, Long Beach, California, USA collection, acquired over 25 years from various major galleries.
