Description:

Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran / Turkey, Luristan, late Bronze to early Iron Age, ca. 2000 to 1000 BCE. A superb cast bronze axe head with an unusual and elegant oval socketing shaft with small spike to one end. The long sweeping blade emerges slightly above the shaft with a long thin triangular groove. This is the first example where we have seen such a design, probably allowing for greater balance when paired with a hefty handle to counterweigh the blade. Size: 6.5" L x 2.5" W (16.5 cm x 6.4 cm)
