Description:

**Originally Listed At $300**

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grater depicting a charming turtle, perhaps an Asiatic softshell turtle (Amyda cartilaginea) bearing intricately incised floral motifs atop its round-cornered, rectangular shell. The animal stands atop a pair of fused 'legs' with flowing foliate motifs carved in low relief that are attached to the upper body via iron nails. The protruding head features a pair of impressed eyes, a tapered snout, and petite nostrils, and attached to the extended lower jaw is a serrated iron grating tool. Traces of red pigment along the underside suggest this tool was at one time painted with vibrant pigments. Size: 14.625" L x 5.9" W x 6.5" H (37.1 cm x 15 cm x 16.5 cm)
