Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grating tool in the form of a recumbent rabbit atop an integral rectangular plinth. The bulbous animal has a stocky body, powerful hind legs, delineated toes on each slender leg, and a thick neck. The raised head bears almond-shaped eyes painted in white, black, and orange hues, and a serrated iron grating tool protrudes from the mouth above an integral shallow dish. Deep red-brown pigment is applied across all surfaces. Size: 20.375" L x 7" W x 7.75" H (51.8 cm x 17.8 cm x 19.7 cm)

  • Condition: Rabbit body reattached to all four legs, with repairs to rim of shallow bowl, and small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions to base, rabbit, and grating tool, with fading to original pigment, and softening to some finer details. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of original pigment throughout.
