Description:

Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Sumatra, ca. late 19th century CE. A hand-carved walrus ivory handle for a ceremonial sword known as a kris (keris). The handle is shaped with a bulbous lower body and a projecting upper body which resembles a toucan beak. This style of handle is known as "Pangulu" or "Penghulu," which means "village leader." Size: 1.125" W x 2.25" H (2.9 cm x 5.7 cm); 3.5" H (8.9 cm) on included custom stand.
