Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan) Pueblo, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A handsome pottery water jar, also known as a tinaja, skillfully hand-built via the coil and scrape method with an elegant form; round shoulder, a corseted neck, and a circular, flared rim, all sitting upon a slightly concave base. Enveloped in a lustrous polish, the exterior is adorned with a black upper body and grey lower body. This bi-chrome effect is done via a centuries-old method of decoration in which a red slip is wiped over the upper 2/3 of the vessel and the lower 1/3 is left bare. Both portions are then stone polished, and when fired in a reduction atmosphere, the red changes to black and the tan underbody turns to grey. This tinaja was used for carrying water on the head, the indented base and broad shoulder helped with balance. Size: 9.5" Diameter x 7.5" H (24.1 cm x 19 cm)

Previously known as the San Juan Pueblo, the Ohkay Owingeh is a federally recognized tribe of Tewa-speaking Pueblo people who returned to their pre-Spanish name in November 2005. In Tewa, their name translates to "place of the strong people." The Ohkay Owingeh are noted for having continued their pottery traditions of simple, undecorated utilitarian wares regardless of the arrival of the Spanish in the late 1500s. The beautiful shapes and minimalist slipped surfaces of these vessel have captivated both their creators and collectors for centuries!
