Description:

Oceania, Samoa or possibly Fiji, ca. late 19th century CE. A large, hand-carved wooden war club with a flat, blade-like face carved as one with a long, cylindrical handle. Around the handle, the maker incised repeated bands of triangles, and inlaid them with white clay. The body of the blade has further incised triangles, these made to form repeated cross-shapes and more complex linear motifs. The craftsman who made this weapon would have been a highly valued member of society, and was part of a distinctive group within society; their choices of design and ornamentation related to the body art in their culture. Size: 4.75" W x 28.5" H (12.1 cm x 72.4 cm); 30" H (76.2 cm) on included custom stand.
