Description:

Western Europe, Portugal, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely personal sword, known as a "smallsword," used by Western European gentlemen when walking about town who wanted to display it as a symbol of vast wealth and high-status when walking about town. The brass hilt is composed of five cast components: the crown-shaped finial, a slender handle adorned with the Portuguese coat-of-arms, a discoid spacer, a broad quillon with foliate-adorned terminals, and a triangular thumb rest with a raised crown and the letters "L t." The forged-steel blade boasts a needle-like form with a sharp, pointed tip, a trefoil-style blade with three lengthy edges, and a shallow midrib along the underside of the blade. Size: 4.25" W x 33.7" H (10.8 cm x 85.6 cm); length of blade: 28.375" L (72.1 cm).

Smallswords were used between gentlemen when settling disputes mostly because of their lightweight construction, but also because slashing and cutting were not perceived as "aristocratic;" thrusting weapons like this example were more sophisticated as it incorporated skills learned from fencing and other high-status fighting styles.
