Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Upper Sepik River area, ca. late 19th century CE. A lengthy, hand-carved wooden beater mallet used to strike a large garamut slit-gong drum. The thick handle allows the musician to wield and grip the mallet effortlessly, and a tapered striking head has both smooth and grooved sides for the creation of different sounds when striking the drum. A slender serpentine design has been carved into each face of the mallet head, imbuing it with a handsome presentation. The entire beater is covered in fine layers of light-brown and dark-brown patina. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 18" H (45.7 cm); 19.375" H (49.2 cm) on included custom stand.
