Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. An iron ceremonial diviner's staff with a bird finial. Birds have a special significance to the Yoruba, representing the triumph of good over evil, and staffs of this kind are called Osun babalawo and carried by diviners or herbalists during rituals and sometimes displayed outside the home for protection. The birds grant power to overcome evil spirts and can also connect the user to the god of herbalism. Size: 19" L x 6" W (48.3 cm x 15.2 cm)
