Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Native American, Northwestern United States, Columbia River Plateau region, Nez Perce, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A large cornhusk bag finely woven or twined from hemp and cotton. Undyed corn husk and dyed yarn is embroidered over the surface to create the motifs. The rim is hemmed with a cotton fabric and leather drawstring. This is a heavily used example with old repairs - leather patches and threads added to tears and a worn corner. Bags woven from cornhusk and native hemp were sought after trade items in the Plateau trade network, and as time went on, these bags were created more ornately using many materials but still retaining brightly colored embroidery largely made from cornhusk. Size: 18" L x 14" W (45.7 cm x 35.6 cm)
