Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo, ca. late 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden effigy figure that represents the likeness of a sick individual. This figure bears a minimalist design with a circular head and three narrow slits for eyes and lips that are accentuated with red pigment. Individuals who undertake healing ceremonies can visualize themselves as the doll as it is being healed; the physical item is believed to draw the negative spiritual energy or sickness out of the afflicted person. Size: 1.8" W x 5.4" H (4.6 cm x 13.7 cm)
