Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lega peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An intriguing anthropomorphic figure of an abstrac presentation, hand-carved from bovine bone or that of another ungulate, created for use in the wealth-driven political society called the Bwami. The figure is defined by its slender waist and delineated legs, sloping shoulders with one raised arm, and a corseted neck line. Incised grooves around the petal-shaped head create the puffy cheeks, full lips, almond eyes, and thin brows which curve inward to form the tapered nose. Lustrous patina in shades of coffee and honey cover the entire figure. Size: 1.2" W x 3.55" H (3 cm x 9 cm); 4.05" H (10.3 cm) on included custom stand.
