Description:

Northern Europe, northern Sweden, Lapland (Lappland), Inuit, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful pipe bowl and stem from the Lappland (anglicized as "Lapland") region of northern Sweden. The pipe bowl is carved from whale or walrus bone and has an angular body, a squat stem slot, and a wide receptacle, and the stem is carved from a single piece of caramel-hued wood. Intricate foliate, geometric, and zoomorphic motifs are incised on the front as well as both sides of the pipe bowl and imbue it with a personalized presentation, perhaps images of symbolic importance to the carver. A fine pipe example from Lapland! Size: 12.75" L x 2" H (32.4 cm x 5.1 cm); 4.625" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand.
