Description:

Asian, Japan, ca. 19th-20thc. Japanese Taiko drums have served a wide range of functions through history, ranging from communication, military action, theatrical accompaniment, religious ceremony, festival performances, and entertainment. Their origins continue to be discussed. Some scholars point to the Jomon period, while there is archaeological evidence that suggests they came about during the Kofun period. This evidence was substantiated by the discovery of haniwa statues holding two-headed drums in the Sawa District of Gunma Prefecture. Perhaps the most magical use of taiko drums has been in kabuki plays such as The Tale of Shiroishi and the Taihei Chronicles which feature taiko accompaniment to enhance the dramatic effects of scenes in the pleasure quarters. Noh theater also utilizes the taiko drumming. One particular school of drumming for Noh theater teaches 65 highly specific types of rhythmic patterns in addition to 25 other special patterns. This taiko drum not only produces wonderful percussive effects, but also boasts exquisitely painted birds in a landscape scene in gold on black background. Measures 13.75" in diameter x 6" high.
