Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden face mask used during Balinese dance celebrations. The highly stylized countenance presents with a bulbous nose, recessed eyes beneath high-arching brows, a slight smirk framed with a thin mustache, and drooping ear lobes. The thick headband sits low on the brow and has a bifurcated frontal element. The entire mask is painted with layers of black and red pigment that create a dramatic theatrical presentation. Size: 6.375" W x 8.3" H (16.2 cm x 21.1 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection; ex-Dan Purcara collection, acquired from the estate collection of a female antiques collector

  • Condition: Abrasions and chipping to pigmentation on obverse, with light encrustations within some recessed areas, and minor fading to original pigment, otherwise intact and very good. Nice remains of pigment throughout.
