Description:

South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful bowl of a broad form, lathe-turned from caramel-hued kou wood with fine graining. The vessel is defined by a planar base, a rounded lower body, slightly tapered walls, and a thin rim surrounding the deep basin. A trio of tie-shaped repairs are visible across a lengthy fissure, though these are meant to be seen as an attractive part of the vessel as a whole. The exterior is nicely polished to imbue a reflective sheen to the walls and base, and the natural, unpolished appearance of the wood is visible on the interior. Size: 6" W x 3.6" H (15.2 cm x 9.1 cm)
