Description:

Polynesia, Hawaiian Islands, ca. late 19th century CE. A fine cup shaped from half of a coconut with a protruding handle that enabled its use as both a drinking vessel and a serving ladle. The hemispherical container features a polished bottom surface and a smoothness within the basin indicative of use, and the handle is carved from the original stem of the fruit. Coconut cups like this example were multi-functional vessels used across the Hawaiian Islands as well as the South Pacific. Size: 5.7" L x 3.8" W (14.5 cm x 9.7 cm)
