Description:

Western Europe, France, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A French naval officer hat of a classic bicorne style with protruding fins on either side of the folded brim. The front and back brims are decorated with intricately embroidered foliate motifs, and thin brown feathers line the interior and produce a wispy fringe. Coiled metal wire braiding curved along the front and terminates at a brass button. Size (hat): 16.125" W x 7.7" H (41 cm x 19.6 cm); (head cavity): 7" L x 7.375" W (17.8 cm x 18.7 cm).

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired around mid-2015
