Description:

Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Loango / Kasai river region, probably Mbala, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful bird effigy club, the wooden handle carved with the head and neck of an avian creature presenting an incised crest and projecting round eyes, each eye with a pair of upward arrow-like motifs incised below it on the cheek. The neck is delineated with three incised bands at the upper end and a band of triangular motifs at the midway point of the handle. A long and hefty curved iron beak is set from the back end and through the head. A wonderful, used example! Size: 17" L x 12" W (43.2 cm x 30.5 cm); 14" H (35.6 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Traces of red pigment on the surface. Wood has attained a smooth, lustrous patina. Iron has attained a russet patina. Age fissures and slight losses above and below the iron 'beak' blade; nails inserted to secure the pick/blade; another loss to one side of neck.
