Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Africa, Kenya or Tanzania, Masai people, late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine wood and steel spear with a petaloid tip, an elongated tang, and a cylindrical staff. Presenting convex faces and a tapered tang, the spear point is bound to the wooden staff by way of vegetal reeds that are wrapped around the point's base. The caramel-hued shaft boasts a lustrous burnish, while the head has a gorgeous silver sheen and was generally kept rust-free by polishing it with animal fat. Spears like this example were a Maasai warrior's most prized possession and were used to defend herds and the community against predators. Size: 54.6" L x 1.25" W (138.7 cm x 3.2 cm)
