Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. late 18th century CE. A finely made, cast brass icon with a square, low relief scene of the Virgin Mary being worshipped by a crown of onlookers. Above Her in an elaborate frame shaped like an onion dome is God and six angelic faces with wings rising on rectangular projections. There are faint remains of enamel, which was a common method to bring color to Russian icons. In order to support traveling priests on missions, bronze and brass religious objects were made that were small enough and light enough to be carried on long journeys through a difficult landscape. These crosses were widespread in Russia by the 17th century, and are often mentioned in the writings of Pushkin and Chekhov. Size: 3.25" W x 5.3" H (8.3 cm x 13.5 cm)
