Description:

Native American, North America, Great Plains region, Plains Indians, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A beautiful Native American pipe, hand-carved from a soft stone called catlinite (also known as "pipestone") with a flat base, a raised mid-rib, a drilled mouthpiece, and a large receptacle. The back end of the pipe is thin and easy to grip while in use, and the iron-rich stone itself is a mottled russet-hued stone with dark inclusions throughout. Catlinite was chosen by the Indians of the Great Plains because it was soft and therefore easier to shape than other harder stones. A fabulous and intact example! Size: 6.5" L x 1.875" W (16.5 cm x 4.8 cm).
