Description:

Near East, Persia, Northwestern Iran, Safavid Empire, ca. late 17th to 18th century CE. A lovely example of Gombroon ware, a white-hued type of pottery with areas of translucency along the walls. This wheel-thrown bowl features eight petaloid panels along the walls bearing petite cruciform 'windows' that allow small amounts of light to pass through. Intricate reticulated motifs and flowing foliage create dense patterns across both the interior and exterior surfaces with a large floral arrangement decorating the center of the basin. The bowl rests atop a squat foot and features a pair of perforated holes, perhaps used for suspending it when not in use. Size: 8.7" W x 3.9" H (22.1 cm x 9.9 cm)

An example of a Gombroon ware bowl hammered for GBP 13,200 ($17,475.74) at Christie's, London "Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds" auction (sale 7389, April 17, 2007, lot 6).
