Pre-Columbian, Southern Peru, Huari/Wari, ca. 650 to 1000 CE. A large figural jar with a face modeled in partial relief. Note the figure's exaggerated jutting chin with its small opening, perhaps intended for inlay, his prominent aquiline nose, pronounced right ear and bulging left cheek, perhaps full of coca. The painting is equally impressive with expressive eyes, detailed coiffure, a spotted section on the backside of the head and chest, perhaps representing an animal pelt or shaved area with the dots representing new hair growth, as well as the grand, pointed harlequin-like collar painted upon the shoulder of the vessel. All is painted in hues of red, black, tan and white. Size: 8-1/4" (21 cm) x 7-1/2" (19.1 cm).
The Huari/Wari potters enjoyed polychrome slip painting, and their techniques can be traced to Nazca ceramic technology. Huari imagery is understudied and not much can be said about the precise identity or meaning of this figure. It is likely, however, that the figure represents a living person of high rank or perhaps an ancestor. The plump and compact body resembles that of the mummy bundles characteristic of the Middle Horizon period. The liquid that this vessel contained likely contributed to the meaning of the piece as well.
