Description:

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 11th century CE. A fabulous and wearable ring, made for a man given the size, composed of a single strip of high-grade (98%) silver which itself is formed from several interwoven strips. The larger terminal has a flared, rabbit-eared design with a stamped circle and triangle below, and the other terminal is slender and wraps around one of the ears. Small areas of green, yellow-green, and blue-green patina dot the recessed areas of the ring. This ring and others like it would have been a visible sign of wealth and prestige. It was perhaps used as currency, deposited in a river as an offering to the gods, or buried with its owner upon their death. Size: 1.2" W x 1.3" H (3 cm x 3.3 cm); US ring size: 12.5; quality of silver: 98%; total weight: 17.7 grams.
