Description:

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 11th century CE. An elegant man's ring made from high grade silver (contains 99% silver) of a sturdy construction with a thin band. The lateral sides of the band display sixty-one stamped triangular forms with a single central dot - twenty-nine on one side and thirty-two on the other, respectively - and the exterior of the band boasts eleven ovoid "eyes" as well as twenty petite circular dots. This ring and others like it would have been a visible sign of wealth and prestige, probably worn by a very large man based on its size, and could have been used as currency, deposited in a river as an offering to the gods, or buried with its owner upon their death. Amethyst fragment for photography purposes only. Size: 1.2" Diameter (3 cm); width of band: 0.1" H (0.3 cm); quality of silver: 99%; total weight: 10.6 grams; US ring size 11.5.
