Description:

**Originally listed at 750**

Northern Europe, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A large and quite decorative Viking bronze belt buckle. Hand-forged and hammered into thin bronze sheet, this looks very similar to buckles one might find in use today. The edge is scalloped with a series of teeth and a double opening would have allowed a leather strap to be looped over the center bar and fastened with the floating prong; several sets of concentric lines decorate the front. The reverse shows 4 small raised nodes whose purpose we do not fully understand. The pin is made of iron. Gorgeous brown patina. Custom stand. Size: 4" W (10.2 cm)
