Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Earliest Horizon, Valdivian, ca. 2300 to 2000 BCE. A well-executed limestone owl carving, this one quite nice as it depicts both the head and winged body. Boldly and deeply carved with strong angular and straight lines from a pale grey limestone with nice white mineral deposits and root marks. The aesthetic is is remarkably in line with the penchant for minimalism among some of our most esteemed modern artists. Custom stand. Size: 7" W x 12" H (17.8 cm x 30.5 cm); 12" H (30.5 cm) on stand as the carving is elegantly angled back

The owl was widely symbolic in the Pre-Columbian world. Owls were considered Shamanic, guiding humans on their journeys to other worlds, the divine, and death. In some cultures an anthropomorphic owl represented a warrior or war god. As a nocturnal bird of prey, the owl was also associated with night hunters, darkness, and the Underworld.
