Description:

Northern and Central Europe, Proto-Celtic Urnfield Culture, ca. 1100 to 800 BCE. A well-preserved example of a bronze "armilla", an armlet worn near the elbow. The piece is made from a coiled, thick bronze wire, wound into a tight, regular spiral with a separate rounded bronze boss hooked into its center by two prongs. The open end of the spiral twists in its opposite direction and then into one and a half thin circles to form a loop through which the arm could pass. Spiral-shaped jewelry seems to have been a staple of the pre-Celtic and Celtic cultures of Europe, and this would have been functional and stylish. Size: 5" W x 6.1" H (12.7 cm x 15.5 cm)
